Date: 5 September 2023

St. Louis, Missouri – The Oyen Lab at Washington University has taken a significant leap forward in its research capabilities with the acquisition of a state-of-the-art Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Microscope generously provided by Thor Labs. Patrick Yang, the lab manager, and Samyuktha Kolluru, a dedicated PhD graduate student, have undertaken the task of setting up and mastering this cutting-edge technology under the guidance of Martin Thunert, an expert from Thor Labs.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a revolutionary imaging technique that provides high-resolution, non-invasive imaging of biological tissues. Its applications in medical and scientific research are extensive, from studying the human eye to investigating tissue microstructures.

Patrick Yang, the lab manager of Oyen Lab, expressed his excitement about the new addition to their research toolkit. “This OCT Microscope from Thor Labs opens up new avenues for our research, especially in the fields of tissue engineering and materials science. Its high-resolution imaging capabilities will allow us to delve deeper into the intricate structures of biomaterials,” he explained.

Samyuktha Kolluru, a PhD graduate student at Washington University, emphasized the potential impact on her research. “Having access to this advanced OCT Microscope will greatly benefit my work, which focuses on tissue engineering and biomaterial characterization. It will allow us to visualize and analyze our samples in unprecedented detail,” she said.

The integration and training for this sophisticated equipment were facilitated by Martin Thunert, an expert from Thor Labs. Mr. Thunert provided hands-on guidance to Patrick and Samyuktha, ensuring a smooth setup and comprehensive training on the OCT Microscope’s operation and applications.

The Oyen Lab’s commitment to advancing research in materials science and tissue engineering is evident in their strategic acquisition of this powerful imaging tool. The lab’s researchers anticipate groundbreaking discoveries and insights into the properties of biomaterials and tissue structures.

Dr. Michelle Oyen, the lab’s principal investigator, expressed her enthusiasm for the future. “The addition of the OCT Microscope to our research capabilities is a testament to our dedication to pushing the boundaries of knowledge in our field. We look forward to the exciting discoveries and advancements it will enable,” she noted.

As Oyen Lab harnesses the power of Optical Coherence Tomography, Patrick Yang, Samyuktha Kolluru, and their colleagues embark on a journey of exploration and innovation, poised to make significant contributions to the realms of materials science, tissue engineering, and beyond.
